Haiti
Our Work
Our early work in Haiti was focused on mental health support for children in Haitian orphanages and schools. Headwaters completed a research study in Haiti in 2011 on children and trauma, in partnership with Georgetown University. Data collection for a follow up study was completed in 2018. Since then, we have expanded our services to include medical and mental health support, education, and public health initiatives.
Sponsor a Future Through the Haiti Children’s Support Program
Headwaters Relief Organization’s Haiti Children’s Support Program supports children at Lifed Christian Orphanage in Haiti through long-term sponsorship, education assistance, health and nutrition support, and collaboration with trusted Haitian-led partners.
Sponsorship creates a personal connection with a child while also supporting shared program needs. This model promotes equity, protects dignity, and ensures responsible use of resources.
Why Sponsor?
Haiti continues to face significant humanitarian and security challenges that affect education, healthcare access, nutrition, and family stability. Many children face barriers to consistent schooling and safe, supportive living conditions.
The Headwaters Relief Organization Haiti Children’s Support Program provides long-term, community-based support through trusted local partners. Sponsorship helps children access education, healthcare, nutrition support, and other essential services while strengthening broader systems of care within the community.
Your sponsorship helps provide:
Education
Tuition, uniforms, books, and school supplies
Health and Nutrition
Basic healthcare access, nutritional support, and wellness monitoring
Basic Needs
Hygiene supplies, clean water support, and emergency assistance
How the Program Works
Sponsors commit to supporting a child for one year. Payments may be made monthly at $30, biannually at $180, or annually at $360.
Sponsors may request a child profile or have a child assigned based on current program needs. Contributions are managed by Headwaters Relief Organization and distributed through Lifed Christian Orphanage with established accountability systems.
Support is holistic, not transactional. Funds support both individual children and shared program needs to prevent inequality, protect dignity, and strengthen overall care. Program activities and financial oversight are monitored through ongoing coordination between Headwaters Relief Organization and local program leadership.
Consistent with Headwaters Relief Organization’s 100% model, sponsorship funds are directed toward approved program expenses supporting children, education, nutrition, healthcare, and related program operations.
READY TO SPONSOR?
Staying Connected as a Sponsor
Sponsors may receive:
- Program updates
- Child progress summaries
- Program stories and photographs
- Opportunities to write letters when appropriate and safe
To protect children and maintain program integrity, direct financial transfers or personal contact outside established program channels are not permitted.
Child Protection and Ethical Commitment
Headwaters Relief Organization is committed to protecting children’s safety, privacy, and dignity. The program follows safeguarding practices that include privacy and consent standards, trauma-informed approaches, cultural respect, and partner oversight.
Photos, stories, and child updates are shared only with appropriate consent and with safeguards to protect children’s privacy and dignity.
Although violence affects parts of Haiti, the program operates through trusted local partners who understand local conditions. Program activities and locations are reviewed regularly to support safety and operational continuity.
The program is designed to support long-term outcomes rather than short-term relief. Through education, health, and community-based support, Headwaters Relief Organization and Lifed Christian Orphanage aim to contribute to stability and resilience for children and their communities.
Our Books
“When Haiti Shakes” was the first book created by Headwaters Relief Organization. This book was designed to help children understand what an earthquake is and teach them what to do if another one occurs. Many children didn’t know what to do when the earthquake happened in 2010. They had no knowledge that the buildings could be dangerous so instead of moving away from the buildings to a safe area, they ran back in the buildings. This resulted in the loss of many lives.
The second and third printing of this book was completed in consultation with the Ministry of Education and translated in three languages, English, Creole, and French. The Ministry has placed “When Haiti Shakes”, including the teacher’s guide, in Haitian schools and libraries.
Public Health
Headwaters has worked with the Ministry of Education in Haiti to develop and provide public health education, working with programs from handwashing and toothbrushing to programs that teach preventative strategies for malaria, Dengue Fever, Chikungunya, and Zika. Our current work includes further development of public health initiatives.
Medical Support
We are providing preventative medical support to children in orphanages, this includes anthropometric monitoring to ensure appropriate age and growth development and adequate nutritional support. Headwaters medical teams have provided medical and surgical camps with free drug distribution in remote parts of Haiti
